The general format of YouTube music has remained basically the same since the re-launch of 2018 but a small change in online and Android shows Google the background theme a little bit.
Unlike other Google apps, YouTube Music started with a dark theme and has no light part. This night-friendly look initially uses a black background but also uses a light gray color. These include the three tabs below, the mini player and the app bar.
As a result the modern element that follows the status bar of Android is now black. This is especially evident on the Libraries tab, and visually distinguishes the gray “Recent Activity” carousel from the list below.
Meanwhile, this result blends the Explore tab, as well as the Search and Album / Playlist pages, at the top of the screen with the System UI. This is a slightly recent link that makes for a very integrated and consistent experience.
As noted on Reddit, this change occurred after a server-side update a few days ago. It wasn’t live in December yet, again the fresh look is available on the web client.
Some have speculated that it may be a precursor to a light theme of YouTube music that allows clients to create better and match every first-party application. This change makes it easier to reverse the interface.
