Xiaomi Poko F2 Pro Review: 5G for only 500 500

“The Poco F2 Pro has a lot of power and 5G support at an affordable price, but the camera can’t compete with the best.”

  • Competitive $ 500 price

  • Top processor and 5G

  • The OELD screen looks great

  • Long battery life

  • Fun macro camera mode

  • Only import to the United States

  • The camera is disappointed

  • There is no water resistance

A 500 500 Poco F2 Pro, with a Snapdragon 865 processor, 5G, 8GB of RAM and a triple-lens 644-megapixel camera module is alluring.

But wait, haven’t you heard of Poko? I can’t blame you for being part of the Xiaomi Empire, the company made its debut in August 2018 with the Pokফphone F1, great glasses and a capable smartphone at a low price.

Poco has released a number of devices since then, but so far no one has been able to come close to replicating the original. The F2 Pro looks like it has our liking about the Pokোphone F1 but can it still compete with the new low-cost, coveted smartphones around it, not with other flagship-killing hardware?

The Poco F2 Pro is about the same size as the OnePlus 8 Pro and has the same aluminum and Gorilla Glass 5 construction, but has a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen on the front. A motorized selfie camera is used to keep the viewing area free from obstruction, but this setup means an overall weight of 219 grams. There is no IP rating for water or dust resistance.

This problem has caused OnePlus 7 to bleed and the similarities do not end here. The rear camera is set inside a notification module with four sensors, similar to the OnePlus phone, while the flash unit sits outside it. I like the HD ring scattered around the camera module, it hits the flash unit as it goes. This gives some character to the back of the phone, such as the curved X-ray pattern on the surface of the module.

The rear glass has a matte finish. It is seen here in the usual cyber gray color but interesting purple and blue models are also available. While it’s not overly reflective, it still attracts lots of fingerprints and I’m disappointed to see it has already collected an inch long scratch. This is a surprising reason because, due to the lockdown restrictions, it has spent almost no time in the pocket or bag at home. However, the Poco box does not include a transparent silicone case.

The side has a power button and a volume rocker that are easy to detect and press but the power button can use different textures with its bright red color. My thumb has an in-display fingerprint sensor with a great placement as it is attached almost every time for or without extending. It is reliable and gives an interesting vibration when it is activated but it is not particularly fast. The motorized camera works for face unlock but only after swiping the screen from lock, so it is nothing faster than a fingerprint sensor.

I don’t think the Poco F2 Pro is stunning, but the notification camera module helps it stand out from many other phones available today and that’s a good thing. It’s a big thing of 8.9mm, which combined with the fairly high weight means it never feels transparent, but it’s comfortable to hold. Enthusiastic smartphone fans will see the Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro, which is available in small quantities on the Poco F2 Pro, look identical both inside and outside the Pro.

The camera

Let’s take a look at the spaces before doing anything else. The main camera has -4-megapixel with f / 1.9 aperture, while the wide-angle has 13-megapixel and f / 2.4 aperture. There is also a 5-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera. The motorized selfie camera has 20 megapixels and an f / 2.2 aperture.

The image quality is adequate, but it should be like these glasses. Photos may lack dynamic range and the camera does not enjoy challenging illumination conditions, meaning the level of exposure is off. The results are variable, and this inconsistency is disappointing. For each shot I liked, there were two that needed editing before I was ready to share.

I like the macro feature. Often, these modes are hit or miss, with low focus and quality, but the Poco F2 Pro concentrates well with the limited prompting you need, and the 5-megapixel sensor means it has enough resolution to share results. Portrait mode has good edge recognition, but is affected by the bizarre exposure and dynamic range problems found in the main camera. I like most selfie cameras with portrait mode the background effectively blurs.

The price of the Poco F2 Pro reflects the focus on its camera tuning. It’s decent, but it can’t keep up with the OnePlus 8 or OnePlus 8 Pro.

You’re looking at a 20: 9 aspect ratio, complete with a 6.67-inch Super AMOLED screen with 2,400 x 1,080-pixel resolution, support for HDR10 Plus. This goes against significant trends in the industry without leaving significant curves on the sides. The Poco F2 Pro has a flat screen with a slight curvature of the glass around it that does not affect the viewing or displaying image.

By default, the screen has a great palette, but full of details. A great example of how this can be seen in the BMW M3 CSL video of the correction always shoots the YouTube channel nicely. The car’s silver gray metallic color contains a much higher metallic tone than the low silver silver shown on the iPhone 11 Pro’s screen. The low sun in this particular video is autumnal and bright on the iPhone, but less atmospheric on the Poco F2 Pro.

Dig into the display settings and you can warm or cool the color palette and adjust the color palette yourself. Despite the overall coolness I was perfectly happy with the default setting.

None of this is critical and I like the screen of the Poco F2 Pro which looks much better than you expected for the $ 500 smartphone. The audio, however, is a bit disappointing. The sound comes almost entirely from the single speaker at the bottom of the phone, only slightly filled from the speakers above the screen.

The Poco F2 Pro has a 3.5mm headphone jack and the sound quality through it is very good.

The software is Android 10 with MIUI 11 which is on top of my Poco F2 Pro. I recently reviewed the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and after facing some software issues I reached out to the F2 Pro with some embarrassment, but in true MIUI form it is much better here than the Mi 10 Pro. Although there are many similarities in terms of technology, why is MIUI so different in its performance from phone to phone.

Yes, the experience of the software on the Poco F2 Pro is strong. It is reliable and stable, and notifications are distributed without fail, even when the phone appears on the family screen while locked. It sounds silly to mark these as positive, but with MIUI, something can happen. I was not disappointed by the Poco F2 Pro.

The aesthetics of MIUI are pleasing with a simple layout and design that deviates from the look of Android in the Google Pixel, but not in an annoying way. Notification shadows, gesture controls, app drawers and settings screens are very close to what has been used elsewhere in the best versions of Android. The overall speed is also good.

Although it is not perfect. Edge’s recognition is poor, though there’s no hard turning of the screen. Palm rejection is the main problem and holding the phone normally sometimes prevents the keyboard from recognizing inputs. I don’t like the extra apps and features that MIUI has added, such as its Security Center, additional browsers and system cleaners, as well as my eBay, WPS Office and LinkedIn apps that don’t need to be pre-installed.

Performance and battery

The Poco F2 Pro has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, depending on the model you buy. My review model had 6GB of RAM. I played Asphalt 9 Legend without any problems, and enjoyed Shooter 1945, highlighting the delightful haptic response provided by the F2 Pro. Here are the results of the criteria:

Geekbench 5: 3325 Multi Core / 910 Single Core

3 Demark Sling Shot Extreme: 6,618 (Vulcan)

The scores are almost the same as the OnePlus 8, which has the same processor and it improves the Exynos-powered Samsung Galaxy S20. Considering the price difference between these three phones, if you want a phone for casual gaming instead of photography, the Poco F2 Pro gives a good idea.

The 4,700mAh battery has serious legs which makes it even more gamer friendly. Although my phone is connected to Wi-Fi for the most part, it had to deal with social media, apps, video calls, photos, videos and some gaming. Despite this, most days have more than 50% left.

Included in the box is a 30 W fast charger. After 20 minutes the phone went from 3% to 41% and was fully charged in one hour 10 minutes. It has great charging performance.

Price, warranty and availability

The Poco F2 Pro comes in two different versions, a 6GB / 128GB model and an 8GB / 256GB configuration. The 6GB / 128GB Poco F2 Pro can be purchased through importers like Gearbest in the US, where it is priced at 499. In the US, the phone is officially available through Shaomi’s online store at 549 British pounds or about 9 689 in higher specifications.

Warranty coverage depends on where you bought the phone. Some importers do not provide a warranty, so check before buying. In the United States, Xiaomi offers a two-year warranty on its devices that covers the Poco F2 Pro and protects it from production defects.

Our tech

The long battery life, fast charging, attractive screen and strong overall performance make it a tempting proposition that has gone a long way beyond the highly competitive price for the Poco F2 Pro. However, the camera is inconsistent, and the software needs to be improved in a few areas.

Is there a better option?

Closer competitors to the Poco F2 Pro include the / 700/600 British Pound OnePlus 8 and the 700/549 British Pound Motorola Edge. If you’re not stuck on Android, consider the $ 700 Apple iPhone 11 OnePlus 8 It’s hard to ignore, because it has a similarly great screen and a faster processor, combined with a better camera and better software.

We recommend looking at the two most powerful low-cost, capable smartphones available right now – the Apple iPhone SE and the Google Pixel 3. Both cost 39 399 and perform very well, the camera on the Pixel 3 really stands out and the overall performance and design of the iPhone SE makes it a winner. The Poco F2 Pro offers great value but it is not as polished as any of the highly recommended smartphones.

Note that the Poco F2 Pro is similar to the Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro, it is not widely available outside of China, and unlike the F2 Pro, if you buy it for international use, you may not have the same access to Google Play.

How long will it last?

The Poco F2 Pro is not water-resistant and does not have a durable body. It comes with a case inside the box, which I suggest you use if you want to avoid scratches already received on my review phone.
