I am special about podcasts, podcast apps, how to subscribe and everything related to the podcast industry. I change my podcast application on an almost weekly basis. I’m passionate about all things podcasts. One trend I’ve seen in 2020 is moving to premium podcasts for additional content. I have subscribed to the premium version of ATP, Cortex and many more. I like to support my favorite shows to get extra content. Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent some time with Wonder Plus. I’ve been a fan of many wonder shows for quite some time, so I want to see what else they have to offer.
Wonder is the home of many popular podcasts. I hear Business Wars every week but these are blood relationships, Hollywood murders, bad batches, dr. Known as several more for Death and Way crashes. I dare say that they are my favorite creators of podcasts because of the high quality content, high production cost and great storytelling. Although this article is not related to Wandari. It’s about Wonder Plus and the value it brings. So what do you get with Wonder Plus?
Wandari is the largest independent podcast publisher in the world. Launched in 2016, it is known for its immersive podcasts, Dunduth, Dirty John, American History Tailors, Business Wars, The Crisis Next Door, and Gladiator has become one of the fastest networks to reach the top ten of podcasts powered by hit shows. Twenty of Wonder’s shows have reached # 1 on Apple podcasts, and Wonder is the only publisher to simultaneously claim the # 1 and # 2 ‘New Podcasts at the Top’ slots in the annual podtrack rankings.
Advertising has gained a bad reputation in recent years, but I’ve landed somewhere in the middle. I’m happy to learn about new products that if there are things that I might be interested in buying, I don’t get any ads most of the time to come live on the show. I have occasional sponsors on my Apple 7 Work podcast but I try to read the ad so we can go back to the show. Advertisers often agree to pay a premium price for advertising on popular shows, so I know that can often help the creator.
I think the model I will be right with in the future is limited bar ads (even for the ones I subscribed to). Instead of reading the long ad, I’m fine with a brief mention at the beginning of the show of less than ten seconds in total with links to show notes. This option allows me to have uninterrupted listening time when the show starts but still allows the producer to make extra advertising money at the top of my subscription.
As part of Wonder Plus, you can listen to all ad-free versions of their shows. This idea can be interesting if you listen to lots of Wandry shows because it’s a way to support the show’s creators and after having a better story experience.
After coming to my Wandry Plus test, I assumed I would have to listen to everything through their app to get the benefits. To my surprise, they provide personalized RSS feeds so you can use the podcast app of your choice. I’ve heard most of the promotions for Wonder Plus on their shows, so I think they should mention something in future ads.
Private RSS feeds are very easy to find when you login to your account on the web, but I’d like to see a system similar to Wonder Relay FM’s membership system where you can scan any QR code to subscribe to the podcast app you like. This will make the subscription process much easier.
Wonder Plus application
While this isn’t something I’ll use, I can admit that if you don’t subscribe to a lot of shows on Apple Podcasts but don’t have the technical knowledge for personal search the Wonder App could be a great way to listen to podcasts could give RSS feeds or require a simple subscription experience. The Wonder app reminds me of Spotify’s lots of podcast experiences. This is an early experience that is highly functional but will disappoint power users.
The main screen shows you the option to continue listening to what you’ve been listening to before, subscribe to new episodes of the shows you’ve subscribed to, new / featured shows, most bipartisan, daily shows, and then it shows you the audience of the shows by category.
As you scroll through the listening you will get an idea of how wide the Wonder lineup has expanded. If you can only listen to the Wandari show, there is no shortage of content for your use. The app has basic podcast features like variable speed playback, subscription, auto-download and uninterrupted playback. Overall, I would give the app an average rating, but I don’t think there’s much more to it than that. Since Wandari offers private RSS feeds, Power users’ experiences allow them to use apps like Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castro or Breaker.
With any subscription service, its value will come down to a lot of value. Wonder Plus plus 4. 99 4.99 per month or. 34.99 per year. I was amazed at how cheap the annual option was. It works for less than $ 3 per month, and if you listen to lots of wonder shows you will find a lot of value in it.
Wrap in Wonder Plus
Wandari has found a great model with premium service. They offer almost all of their shows with ads for free, but with their plus plan you get additional content, introductory episodes, ad-free options, and the ability to subscribe to the podcast app of your choice. If you are a fan of Wandari content, Wandari Plus is not wise in terms of price.
