The Pixel 5 has already begun a great preparation to start life, thanks to gaps display issues, battery indicator stalling, a proximity sensor Flickr bug and now some volume level issues.
(Updated 01/06/2021): This issue has been resolved as a January 2021 update for Pixel devices. If you’re still having problems, it’s wise to get updated as soon as you can.
Original article below 11/17/2020:
Rising reports on Google’s support forum include allegations of volume level control in the new Pixel 5 unit. The matter is published in two cases. First, when watching video content, the volume level can drop randomly without any caution. Second, all of a sudden you see system volume levels such as notification tones, touch sounds, a click of a screenshot, and a large conflict of system sounds. The problem is that when using system-level volume controls and sliders, some Pixel 5 handsets still have problems.
Reports of this issue have been around since mid-October, but are growing on sites like Reddit as more people get their pre-orders and pick up the device. Fortunately, Google is now aware of some Pixel 5 owners being plagued by volume issues, and a Google community expert responded to the Pixel Help Forum with the following:
With each new Pixel phone we work to improve the volume by making sure customers don’t miss important phone calls and notifications. The settings for the ringtone and notifications in the pixel are tied together so that these volume changes affect both of these settings. Thank you for your feedback on these settings and we’ll work on improving future updates to the Pixel 5.
After experiencing this personally, it can be very worrying when your phone suddenly explodes while you set the volume to its lowest level. Of course, a temporary solution is to put your phone in vibrate or silent mode – something you may have to do actively on a daily basis if you’re infected.
Google’s response to public complaints (very optimistic) points to a solution to this bug in the very near future. If you encounter volume issues with your Pixel 5, you can always submit a bug report with the heading Settings> About Phone> Feedback About This Device, which can help sort out this issue more quickly.
