The British Soap Awards is one of the many events to be canceled in 2020 as a coronavirus epidemic, marking the culmination of more than two decades of success in ITV’s annual celebration series.
Fear not, however, the makers of the glitter show served a treat for soap fans who missed the annual dose of red carpet glamor with a weekly new documentary this weekend, celebrating the history of TV’s lively awards show.
Celebrating 21 years of the British Soap Awards Promoted Sunday 26th June at 9pm on ITV. Narrated by Philip Schofield, who hosted the show and tried to keep up with the extraordinary audience of soap stars since 2006, it’s a fun, affectionate look back to the most memorable winners, speeches and unforgettable moments since the first event in 1999.
Iconic’s storyline and will be revisited with EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emerald, Holiox and Doctors, as well as the show, as well as several big-name guest presenters who have been secured for several years by soap royalty Joan Collins, Linda Gray, Linda and US TV show Evan. Legends include Cagney and Lacey herself, Tyne Daly and Sharon Glace.
The show also has some trivia about which soaps won which stars and which ones won the most awards (Spoiler: Hopefully EastEnders Lassi Turner will have a much higher profile as she has received several shelf-loads of British soap awards since her debut in 2004).
The interesting part, of course, is that the archive footage shows how soap stars have changed over the years, with Ray Quinn’s acceptance of winning an award for Brookside in 2002 when he was undoubtedly most embarrassed when he returned at the age of 13.
Soaps resumed production after the lockdown and to get back into the business, forcing them all to stop filming, what better time to show some of the most stagnant TV and some love for the most influential genres? Here’s to getting back on the red carpet for reality in 2021 …
