A couple of years ago Apple introduced MOV as a go-to format for videographers or anyone using QuickTime. Today, most people consider MOV files to be an older format and it is more convenient to use MP4 files.
Unfortunately, you may still have a large collection of old MOV files on your Mac. With a little patience, you can convert them to MP4 file format by following these step-by-step instructions.
How to convert MOV files using iMovie (MacOS)
Whether you’re running the latest version of MacOS Catalina (here’s how to download it) or something a bit older, there’s no problem converting your MOV files to MP4 using the built-in iMovie tool.
Step 1: Launch iMovie, a privately owned video-editing software with your Mac (if not, you can download it for free from the App Store). If the app isn’t already in your dock, click the Finder icon, select the apps in the left-hand pane, and select iMovie from the results list. Once opened, click the File menu in the Applications toolbar and select New Movies from the drop-down menu.
Step 2: Click the Large Import Media button.
Step 3: This will open the media browser. Click the file you want to import, then click Import in the bottom-right corner.
Step 4: Now that the file has been imported, click on it and a yellow border will appear around it. Then, click the File menu in the Applications toolbar and select Share from the results drop-down, then click File.
Step 5: Adjust the export settings if you want, then click Next.
Step :: Finally, choose a name for the file and click Save where you want to save it. You can see the export progress as a small circle in the upper-right corner of iMovie; When the export is finished, you will see a desktop notification. Your MOV file has now been converted to an MP4 file.
If that doesn’t work, check out Apple’s guide on how to fix iMovie for some quick tips on how to SIM out.
How to convert MOV files using Cloud Convert (web-based)
If you’re using a device other than a Mac – such as a Windows-based PC – you can still easily convert MOV files to MP4 using an online application. For example, we will use CloudQuart, a free online service designed to handle a wide range of file formats without any hassle. This has been our go-to for years, but you need to upload your video files to a remote server, remember that your video converting company may have access to it. While we won’t identify it as a security threat (or we don’t think any of it will), it’s still significant that you can consider what kind of video conversion you have here.
We also like OnlineConvert if you want alternatives.
Step 1: Navigate to the CloudQuart website and click the Select File button at the top of the page. Next, select the MOV file you want to convert and click Open at the bottom-right of the pop-up window.
Step 2: Once you reach the next page, you will want to toggle until you are listed as one of the MP4 output options.
Step 3: Once you have selected, click the Convert button on the right. The process may take some time depending on the size of the file, but once done, click the green download button near the top of the page. Lastly, save the video and enjoy your new mp4 file.
