Conor McGregor will make UFC return “at welterweight” to open door for Nate Diaz rematch or Jorge Masvidal mega-fight – The Sun

CONOR McGREGOR agreed to stay at lean for his next UFC fight – opening the door to face either Nate Diaz or Jorge Masvidal.

The 31-year-old Irishman marked his UFC comeback in January to win a 40-second win over Donald Cerrone, but made it at 170lb to avoid a rough weight cut to light weight.

He has since focused on the lightweight belt, but looks frozen from the picture after Justin Gaethje won the interim strap to set up a reunion with Khabib Nurmagomedov – who beat McGregor in 2018.

With the champion and No1 contestant otherwise involved, former UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen thinks the most profitable and favorable move for McGregor is to stay at welterweight.

It leaves him with the option to face Diaz for the third time – with the duo one – or fight Masvidal for the “Baddest Mother F *** er” belt.

Sonnen told Sky Sports: “I’m just not convinced he’ll return to 155lb. If we see Gaethje catch Khabib, I’m inclined to believe he’s just pushing the schedule for Conor.

“I think Conor is looking for something else to do.

“I think maybe Jorge Masvidal is playing, Nate Diaz’s trilogy is playing. I’m just not convinced Conor’s next fight will be at 155lb.”

Dana White, head of the UFC, wants Khabib to face Gaethje for the undisputed crown in September, and McGregor will also return, and if the South Pole wins, he will be next for the lightweight belt.

The Celebrity has become the first fighter to hold two titles at once, and wants to make history by becoming a three-division champion.

And Sonnen argues that McGregor is the right No. 1 contender for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title that Masvidal discussed.

He said: “I think he will fight at 170. I think you could argue that Conor is the No 1 contestant at 170.

“If they’re Usman and Masvidal, and I hope they do, I hope they all work out, we just see the gameplay, I think that’s really appropriate combat, I’m not sure you can’t tell Conor not to come.

“There are some good arguments. Leon Edwards comes to mind. You always have T-Wood (Tyron Woodley) there, Colby Covington. Conor’s name is as good as any I’ve just thrown out.”
