Apple News lost to the New York Times due to ‘little control’ and ‘lack of direct relationship’

With the New York Times leaving the platform, Apple News is losing one of its largest publishers. The outlet for two big reasons was “Apple has given it some leeway in terms of direct relationships with readers and little control over the business.”

The New York Times, in its own publication, shared the news with the decision to take effect on Monday, June 29:

The New York Times reported Monday that it is moving beyond partnering with Apple News, as the news agency struggles to get readers’ attention and compete with large technology companies for dollars. Starting Monday, the Times stories will no longer appear on the Curated Apple News Feed, which is available on Apple devices, along with articles from other publications.

NYT highlights that it is one of the first major media outlets to leave Apple News and says that the platform has not met its goals:

The Times is one of the first media companies to come out of Apple News. The Times, which has added new customers as a core business goal, says Apple has given it little in the way of direct relationships with readers and little control over the business. It said it hopes to drive readers directly to its own website and mobile app so that it can “finance quality journalism.”

NYT’s COO Meredith Levitt shares more about leaving Apple News:

“The key to a healthy model between Times and Platforms is a direct way to get those readers back into our environment, where we control the presentation of our reports, the relationships we have with our readers, and the nature of our business rules,” said Chip Operating Officer. Wrote in the memo. “Our relationship with Apple News does not meet these parameters.”

As part of this, Apple says it is still “committed to supporting quality journalism.”

An Apple spokesman said the Times “only provided Apple News with a few stories a day” and that the company would continue to provide readers with reliable information from thousands of publishers. “We are committed to supporting quality journalism through proven business models of advertising, subscriptions and commerce,” he said.

NYT highlights that Apple News has about 125 million readers, but ad monetization was weak for media publishers, and Apple deducts 30% of any subscriptions purchased through the app.

Significantly, the New York Times has become a part of Apple News +, Apple’s paid subscriptions to news and magazines. Even with a big push to Apple News and nothing from Apple News + from the start, it looks like NYT and Apple will continue to work together on things like podcasts and apps.

In her written statement to staff, Ms. Levine said the termination of the partnership with Apple News would have a “material impact” on the Times business and was not expected to work differently with Apple, including podcasts and hardware. .
