The right treatment can make or break a game – and make great gimmick games legends. Instead of getting bogged down in the worst, we’re always looking for the best gimmicks to get into gaming. Sometimes it’s something small, and sometimes it’s the whole game, but these are disguises that we want to see many more times.
There’s a lot of piece-by-piece pieces out there, so I’m totally acknowledging the absence of lots of choices. Is it a trick to resurrect ields from hello? It’s become the most popular, but we’re looking at some more niche ideas – and hopefully that’s why they’re so great. Either way, feel free to tell us what we missed.
And if you think we’re getting too positive, don’t miss our list of the best gameplay games that make good games worse.

Nemesis system (Shadow of Murder / Shadow of War)
The nemesis system is something special that creates the shadow of murder. Instead of fighting anonymous orcs, you stand up against uniquely randomly produced orcs with your own strengths and weaknesses. These orcs can be wildly creative and deadly – some orcs may wait for an attack to attack your hero from the shadows or get rid of an attack you’ve used before. An orc can even become your “nemesis” and constantly reappear, making fun of you and showing signs of their previous defeat.
The Shadow of War simply multiplies the unique qualities of the Nemesis system, adding more types of orcs and more insane abilities – you can face special ORKs with two heads, or the ORC knows how to deal with all your skills. By defeating (or assisting) the Orcs in the Nemesis System menu, you can level them up, or mind-control them, and take charge of the army by helping your ally Orcs as a World. This system has a lot of interesting little sacrifices, we all just want to see it ported into more games.

Gravity gun (Half-life 2) & Portal songs (Portal / Portal 2)
This double dose of gun-based gimmicks changes how we interact in FPS. The Gravity Song is an impressive piece of technology that allows you to manipulate many physics objects in Half-Life 2 – mostly so that you can turn stuff in front of enemies or solve puzzles. It features so many prestigious, Gravity songs in many games, including the new Half-Life: Alex VR game. For Gravity songs to exist, the world needs to fill objects with realistic physics, which was very early when Half-Life 2 first came out. It was a big change in how the games were created that really immersed us.
And Gravity Inspired by In-Turn Portal and Portal Guns from Portal 2, some of the best puzzle games of the 2000s. The portal song allows players to shoot two interconnecting portals to solve test chamber puzzles – it’s creative and mind-blowing fun once it comes to hanging. Portal Gun Jimic solo has basically created a new genre of FPS Guzzal.
